Massey ShakeOut

New Zealand ShakeOut is an international, multi-country, multi-agency earthquake exercise led in New Zealand by the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management, and supported by multiple other government and non-government agencies, emergency services, lifeline utilities and other groups.

Massey registered to participate in the nationwide Drop, Cover and Hold drill at 9.15am on the 15th October 2015.

All staff were encouraged to participate in Massey’s 2015 ShakeOut by:

  • Championing the ShakeOut activity in their work area
  • Displaying the ShakeOut Presentation and Drop, Cover and Hold video to students during the 9-10 am lecture on the 15th October.
  • Counting how many people took part in their area and taking photos of people in position (with their permission) and sending them to their Campus ShakeOut Coordinator

These are some of the great photos we received: ShakeOut Photos 2015

How prepared is your Department/College/School to continue operation following an emergency?

All Departments/Colleges/Schools are encouraged to identify how prepared your team is to continue its key functions following, for example, a major earthquake. The Christchurch experience showed that it is difficult to communicate with staff following emergency events, and we cannot assume that we will be able to continue our business operations from our primary worksites, even after the main impact is over.

Now is a good time for Departments and Schools to review or develop telephone trees (or identify other ways of communicating with their staff following emergency events); for staff to update their emergency contact information under My Details in MyHR; and to develop and test business continuity plans.

Information on how to develop Business Continuity Plans is located on the Risk Management Webpages
