David Downes is a Wellington-based composer/animator with a fascination for stylistic and medium hybrids. He has pursued an individual path of creative work, most of it using electronic/digital technology. His work is frequently linked with contemporary dance, theatre, and film.
He will be showing two animated film/music projects.
Inner Phases (2014) was a collaboration between composer Michael Norris and animator David Downes. The work is loosely structured by the Chinese philosophical notion of ‘Wu Xing’ or ‘five ‘phases’ which describe the cycles of the natural world.
I’ll Hum The First Few Bars (2016) is a music/animation work originally commissioned by Orchestra Wellington. It was a collaboration between composer David Long, animator David Downes, and robotics artist Jim Murphy.
