The New Zealand Army is charged with defending our nation, fighting wars and responding to national and international emergencies. And yet the machinations of its operations are often opaque; only exploding into the limelight and creating further puzzlement when their personnel are implicated in civilian casualties, as we have seen with the recent publication of Nicky Hager and Jon Stephenson’s book, Hit & Run.

How has this come about, and what can be done to ensure greater transparency in the future? How can we better acquaint ourselves with the functions of our army? How do we improve army culture, including enhancing the role of women and promoting greater gender equality? How do we make good soldiers?

These are some of the questions posed by a team of expert contributors in Army Fundamentals. Esteemed academics and army personnel, including Lieutenant Colonel Jane Derbyshire and Lieutenant Colonel Josh Wineera, offer their unique and considered viewpoints in this fascinating and comprehensive survey of the New Zealand army.
