Russ Ballard grew up in Kenya in a farming family and qualified in agricultural science at Massey, where he balanced his studies with sporting activities (winning a blue for discus throwing) and met his wife Phillipa.
He completed his PhD (University of Florida). After a number of years working in Forestry Research in Rotorua and the USA he returned to NZ to take up the role of Director of Research at the New Zealand Forest Service.
Dr Ballard proceeded to have a distinguished career in senior government, as Secretary of Forestry, Director General of Education and of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, with a final appointment in 1996 as CEO of Land Information New Zealand.
Ballard retired in 2003. In 2002, Ballard was presented with a Massey University 75th anniversary Medal. In 2005, he was appointed to the University Council. He was the University's Chancellor from 2009 to 2013. Russ works as an independent director and is a chartered fellow of the Institute of Directors.
