Massey University Dean’s Graduation Awards acknowledge doctoral candidates for timely completion, with support for expenses related to completion of the doctoral degree (e.g., reimbursement for thesis binding, graduation gown hire).
These awards are for full-time and part-time, domestic and international doctoral candidates who complete their thesis within 4 EFTS (i.e., the equivalent of four full-time years or 6 part-time years). This means candidates have successfully completed the examination process, made and had emendations approved and submitted their final bound and electronic copies to the Graduate Research School on, or prior to, the ‘completion date’ without any extensions. Any periods of suspension are excluded when calculating the EFTS that a candidate has consumed. So, for example, if a full-time doctoral candidate submits four years after starting the thesis, but took six-months of suspension during the candidacy, then they have consumed 3.5 EFTS, not 4 EFTS.
There is no selection process. All eligible candidates who submit their completed thesis between 1 October and 31 December 2017 will receive an award.
Upon submission of two hardbound and one digital copy of the thesis, and a citation for graduation, to the Graduate Research School, the completion time will be verified by the Graduate Research School and a recommendation will be made to the Dean for the award. A formal letter of congratulations will be sent to the candidate, supervisors and head of academic unit, with payment made to the candidate within 7-10 working days of confirmation of banking details.
The Dean’s Graduation Award is valued at $350 to support candidates with graduation related costs. The award is tax-free.
