Selection panel

The Vice-Chancellor’s Doctoral Scholarships are awarded by the University Scholarships Committee.

The committee includes representatives from each college and the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Māori and Pasifika.

The decision of the University Scholarships Committee is final. It has the right to refrain from making an award if there are no suitable applicants.

Conditions of the scholarship

Candidates are required to be enrolled in their approved course of research as a full-time or part-time candidate at Massey University. Candidates should advise the University Scholarships Committee of changes to candidacy, including suspensions from study, changes to part-time or full-time status, or withdrawal from studies.

Vice-Chancellor’s Doctoral Scholarships may be terminated or suspended at any time at the discretion of the University Scholarships Committee for the following reasons:

  • lack of satisfactory academic progress in the applicant's approved programme of research or
  • breach by the applicant of any of Massey University's rules or regulations.

Ongoing funding may be subject to satisfactory completion of doctoral confirmation.

Vice-Chancellor’s Doctoral Scholarships are tenable with any other scholarship, bursary, award or prize, up to the value of $22,500 per annum. The Vice-Chancellor’s Doctoral Scholarship will reduce commensurably with co-tenure above $22,500 per annum.

Full-time candidates in receipt of a Vice-Chancellor’s Doctoral Scholarship are expected to engage in 40-50 hours per week of study, but may be employed on a part-time basis of up to 500 hours per annum. Part-time candidates in receipt of a Vice-Chancellor’s Doctoral Scholarship are expected to engage in 20-30 hours per week of study, but may be employed up to 1500 hours per annum.

Candidates enrolled in the DClinPsych internship year may continue to hold the Vice-Chancellor’s Doctoral Scholarship, if their net internship is less than the value of the Vice-Chancellor’s Doctoral Scholarship.

Candidates who change enrolment from part-time to full-time or visa-versa must inform the University of Scholarships Committee who will consider each application on a case-by-case basis, seeking financial approval from the Finance Manager, Office of the Provost, for the continuation of the scholarship. Candidates are only eligible for the sum total of the scholarship ($90,000). A change in status does not guarantee a continuation of the scholarship.

Applications close on 1 December each year for tenure in the following year. Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.
