Applications are now open for funding from the Wairakei Charitable Trust to undertake projects that address the issues of Nga Hapu in maintaining their ancestral connections to waahi tapu and other Taonga affected by the activities of the Wairakei and Poihipi geothermal power stations.

The Trust was established during the reconsenting of the Wairakei Geothermal Power Station.

Under the trust deed ratified with the signing of the resource consent renewals, the trust will consider its first applications for project funding from Nga Hapu of Rauhoto Marae, Te Rangiita Marae, Oruanui Marae and Maroa Marae.

The Trust has criteria for funding projects which are outlined on the Trust website.

Educational scholarships for students of Nga Hapu descent are also open. The Trust will make available an annual Wairakei-Tauhara Hapu tertiary education scholarship of $3000 to encourage and upskill Nga Hapu members in tertiary education.

The tertiary education scholarship has a special emphasis on (but not limited to) the area of natural resource management. The annual scholarships will also be awarded every year for the duration of the consents.

Applications for the first round of project funding and for the educational scholarships are now being accepted.
