The Government of New Zealand introduced The Prime Minister’s Science Prizes in 2009 as a way of raising the profile and prestige of science among New Zealanders.

There are five prizes in total with a combined value of 1 million dollars.


The Prime Minister’s Science Prize
This Prize is for a transformative scientific discovery or achievement, which has had a significant economic, health, social, and/or environmental impact on New Zealand, or internationally. It will be awarded to an individual or team instrumental in creating the impact.

While the research behind the discovery or achievement may have occurred over any time-period, to be eligible there must be a clear indication that the impact on New Zealand or internationally has taken place in the last five years.

The total prize is worth $500,000. Of this, $100,000 will go directly to the individual or team with no expectations and $400,000 will be to support their on-going work.

(Scientific should be interpreted broadly to include natural, physical, mathematical and information sciences, applied science, technology, engineering, social science and multi-disciplinary science)



The Prime Minister’s MacDiarmid Emerging Scientist Prize
An outstanding emerging scientist undertaking research for a PhD in New Zealand, or within eight years of the date of the award of their PhD. Valued at $200,000. $50,000 will go directly to the recipient with no expectations and $150,000 will go to support their ongoing work.

The Prime Minister’s Science Communication Prize
This Prize will be awarded to either a practising scientist who can demonstrate an interest, passion and aptitude for science communication and public engagement, or to a person who has developed expertise in public engagement with, or communication of complex scientific or technological information to the public.

$50,000 of the Prize is to be used to support the recipient to carry out a programme of activities to further their understanding of media communication.

$50,000 of the Prize money is available to the recipient with no expectations on its use.
