Purpose
These scholarships were established by Massey University to:
•assist promising students in preparation for careers in commercial music industry, practice or technology;
•foster creative excellence within the New Zealand music community; and
promote Massey University’s Bachelor of Commercial Music degree.

The inaugural scholarship was launched in 2015 in association with Recorded Music New Zealand who remain active in promoting it via the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards.

Tenure and value
Three scholarships are to be awarded for students undertaking full-time study commencing Semester 1, 2018. Each scholarship is for one of the three Bachelor of Commercial Music degree majors, being: Music Industry, Music Practice and Music Technology.

A total value of $7,500 each scholarship towards tuition fees for three students across their three years of full-time undergraduate study in the Bachelor of Commercial Music degree at Massey University’s College of Creative Arts. The scholarships will be paid over three years as outlined in the “Payment” section below.

Eligibility
Applicants who wish to use the scholarship to enter into the Music Practice major must attend a pre-enrolment audition, and their acceptance into the programme will be subject to the outcome of this.

Applicants who wish to use the scholarship to enter the Music Technology or Music Industry majors, must attend a pre-enrolment briefing.

The awardee must also meet the University admission requirements (refer http://www.massey.ac.nz/massey/learning/programme-course-paper/programme-course-and-paper-search.cfm).

For International students, this includes immigration and any English language requirements.

Criteria
Academic (creative) merit, and creative potential, demonstrated by:

1. Formal academic achievements:
School leaver applicants must have attained an NCEA Level 2 certificate in Year 12 (or the equivalent in CIE or IB, or overseas qualification). Non-school leaver applicants must be able to document academic achievements that are comparable with those required of school leaver applicants at University Entrance or similar.

2.Evidence of creative potential:
All applicants must attend an audition (Music Practice) or briefing (Music Industry; Music Technology), which provides an opportunity to demonstrate their creative potential and commitment. The pre-enrolment audition or briefing is part of the entry procedure for the Bachelor of Commercial Music.

In making their decisions, the Selection Committee will prioritise applicants’ creative potential as demonstrated in the pre-enrolment audition or briefing.

Responsibility for the Award
The scholarships shall be awarded on the recommendation of the Selection Committee.

Selection Committee
The Selection Committee will be comprised of three staff of the College of Creative Arts, including at least two Commercial Music staff.

The Selection Committee has the right to refrain from making an award in the event of there being no suitable applicants of sufficient merit and their decision is final.

Payment
A $1,250 payment will be made directly into each of the scholarship awardee’s fees account by the Scholarships Office in the second week of each semester for tuition fees, up to a maximum allocation as follows: $2,500 in 2018; $2,500 in 2019; $2,500 in 2020.

These payments include GST if payable.

Conditions of the awards
Each awardee will be required to sign a simple contract setting out the obligations associated with accepting this scholarship, which are:
1. To be enrolled full-time in the Bachelor of Commercial Music.
2. To abide by the rules and regulations of Massey University.
3. To maintain good academic standing throughout their study.
4. To advise the Programme Leader, Commercial Music immediately of any withdrawal from full-time study in the Bachelor of Commercial Music.
5. To notify Massey University promptly of any change of address, telephone number or bank account details.
6. In the event of withdrawal from the programme, to reimburse Massey University in full for all scholarship money paid to the student by the University.
7. The recipient may also be required to repay Massey University for the full scholarship money or part thereof if the student:
a. Fails to make satisfactory academic progress
b. Breaches any of Massey University’s rules or regulations
c. Breaches this contract

Awardees are not eligible to hold any other Massey University scholarship or bursary at the same time as this scholarship. Awardees do remain eligible to receive Massey University prizes.

The final deadline for applications is 3 December, 2017. There is no provision for late applications for these scholarships.

After you submit your application form, we will contact you to arrange your briefing/audition if you have not already done so. We will send you an outline of what you need to prepare in advance and what you can expect at the briefing/audition. Briefings/auditions can be attended in person or by skype.

The awardee will be announced after NCEA results in January 2018, because the recipient must be eligible to enter university.
