Introduction
The New Zealand Biosecurity Institute offers two annual grants from a total funding pool of $3000. The two grants comprise of a Travel Award and a Study Award. In years where applications fail to meet the standards expected by the Institute, the awards may not be issued.

Applications for the Study and Travel Awards close on 31 October each year.

Study Award
Purpose statement
The purpose of the award is to provide funds to assist with an individual's research to improve knowledge in the field of biosecurity.

Eligibility and Conditions
The study award, to a maximum of $1000, is restricted to New Zealand citizens or residents of New Zealand and studying a discipline related to biosecurity.

Evidence of employment and/or of registration with a recognised university or other tertiary training provider is required.

Where the applicant is currently in employment, preference will be given to applicants who have their employer's approval for the research.

A written report on the research is to be submitted to the Institute within six months of the work being completed. Where the award contributed to long-term work, annual progress reports are to be submitted.

The Institute expects the recipient to make a short presentation on the research at the annual National Education and Training Seminar. Registration, travel and accommodation expenses will be paid by the Institute.

The New Zealand Biosecurity Institute may withhold payment until the presentation of final confirmation that the study or research project is to proceed. A letter of intent to make the payment will be issued on the successful granting of the award.

Tenure
The award is a single payment, for one 12 month period, awarded annually.

Applications
All applications shall be made using the application form available from http://www.biosecurity.org.nz/awards/awards/. Extra pages may be included, but ensure all parts of the form are filled out.

The applications shall be accompanied by:
a) The names and contact details of two referees.

(b) A statement explaining the relevance of the candidate's proposed study.

(c) Any other evidence that the candidate judges relevant to the application

Applications will be accepted from 01 August to the closing date of 31 October each year. The applications and accompanying material must be emailed to the Awards Co-ordinator.

Assessment Criteria
In making an award the Selection Committee will take into consideration:
· The value of the proposed research to furthering New Zealand's biosecurity interests
· The practical relevance of the proposed research to the aims of the NZ Biosecurity Institute
· The quality of the individuals application
· The personal qualities of the applicant
· Referees comments

Travel Award

Purpose statement
The purpose of the award is to provide a member of the NZBI with funds to assist with travel expenses where that member is undertaking travel to further his or her knowledge in the field of biosecurity.

Eligibility and Conditions
The travel award to the value of $2000 is restricted to currently paid up members of the NZBI. Preference will be given to applicants who have been continuously paid up members for more than 1 year.

Where the applicant is currently in employment, preference may be given to applicants who have their employer's approval for the travel.

The proposed travel is to be undertaken within 12 months of the award being granted.

A written report on the travel is to be submitted to the NZBI within 6 months of the travel being completed.

The NZBI requires the recipient to make a short presentation on the trip at its annual National Education and Training Seminar. Registration, travel and accommodation expenses will be paid by the NZBI to enable the recipient to attend this event.

The NZBI may withhold payment until the presentation of final confirmation of the travel. A letter of intent to make the payment will be issued on the successful granting of the award.

Applications for up to $1000 will be accepted from 01 August to the closing date of 31 October each year. The applications and accompanying material must be sent by email to the Awards Co-ordinator. Applications for a discretionary amount of a further $1000 will be accepted outside this period.

Assessment Criteria
In making an award the selection committee will take into consideration:
· The value of the proposed trip to furthering New Zealand's biosecurity interests
· The practical relevance of the proposed trip to the aims of the NZBI
· The individual's work history in the biosecurity field
· The quality of the individual's application
· The personal qualities of the applicant
· Referees' comments
· A member of the selection committee may contact the applicant for additional information.

Selection
The selection committee for each award will be comprised of three members of the Executive of the NZ Biosecurity Institute. The decision of the Committee shall be final and is not subject to appeal or review.

The Decision
All applicants will be notified of the decision of the Committee within 30 days of applications closing, or, for the discretionary amount, within 30 days of the application being received. The award funds will be made available to the successful applicant(s) after January 1st of the following year, or, for the discretionary amount, at a time agreed by the executive of the NZBI.
