The purpose of the Bursary is to provide financial assistance to full time postgraduate research students who require a short term (up to 6 months) period of study or research abroad in the following categories:
Seminars, workshops or courses
Conferences, if attendee is presenting a paper
Cooperative research with researchers abroad
Research or fieldwork at facilities not available in New Zealand (e.g. Research institutes, libraries etc.)
Tenure and value
The Bursary shall be awarded annually. The value of the Bursary shall be up to a total value of $2,000 with the amount determined each year from the interest earned on the capital fund. Funding is intended to contribute to the costs, but is not intended to cover all expenses. Funding can be used to cover travel, accommodation, registration fees, and/or research costs.
Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or Permanent Residents enrolled full-time at Massey University and hold good standing in a postgraduate degree programme.
The Bursary will be awarded on the following criteria:
Strength of the proposed research (well-defined, achievable within the time stipulated, etc.)
Potential benefit of the proposed research abroad to the student's research programme
The student's ability to represent New Zealand and Massey University positively.
Responsibility for the award
The Bursary shall be awarded by the University Scholarships Committee.
The Bursary shall be paid in one payment at an appropriate time on receipt of confirmation of arrangements.
Conditions of the award
Applicants may hold other awards and scholarships provided the rules of the other award allow it but in making a recommendation for this award the Scholarships Committee may take into account other scholarships, bursaries and awards held by the candidates, with a view to achieving a fair distribution of monies among qualifying candidates.
If there are no applicants of sufficient merit the Selection Committee may refrain from making an award.
At the discretion of the University, the annual interest may be reinvested to maintain the value of the capital fund, in which case no Bursary shall be awarded in that year.
The University may vary the regulations at its own discretion if it deems it necessary, provided that the essential purposes of the Bursary are fulfilled as far as possible.
Travel must in all cases comply with the Massey University Course Related Student Travel Overseas Policy.
The closing date for applications is 28 February annually.
