Associate Professor Christine Cheyne is Resource & Environmental Planning Programme Co-ordinator in the School of People, Environment and Planning. Her research focuses on local government (including local political leadership, funding, long-term planning, electoral participation/voter turnout and local government reorganisation), environmental and conservation policy and planning, transport policy and planning and public participation in policy and planning processes. She has extensive knowledge of the local govenrment, resource management and conservation legislation. Her current research focuses on collaborative planning and governance in natural resource management, active transport, shared transport and the development of low carbon urban environments. She has been a member of the Taranaki-Whanganui Conservation Board (2004-2014) and has been a member of the Horizons (Manawatu Regional Council) Regional Transport Committee for several terms since 2005. In 2006-2007 she was a member of the independent Local Government Rates Inquiry Panel. She is an Associate Member of the New Zealand Planning Institute and a member of the core group (executive) of the New Zealand Association of Impact Assessment.
Associate Professor Christine Cheyne leads Massey's Resource and Environmental Planning programme. Her research focuses on urban and natural resource planning issues and, in particular, the role of local government and communities in planning proceses, She is an expert on various aspects of local government including representation, participation, political leadership and electoral systems. She also has had a long-standing involvment in transport planning. She has worked at Massey University since 1990 and prior to that worked in local goverrnment. She is currently an advisory member of the Horizons (Manawatu-Wanganui) Regional Council Regional Transport Committee representing active and public transport..
