Project Title: Cold season tolerance of warm season turf grasses

Traditionally, European grasses like perennial ryegrass, browntop, and various fescues ('cool season grasses') have been the mainstay of the New Zealand turf industry. In the warmer parts of New Zealand, especially Northland, Auckland City and Bay of Plenty, cool season grasses struggle to perform well in summer heat or water deficit. Hence, there is a rapidly growing interest in using grasses of warm temperate or tropical origin instead. These so-called 'warm season' grasses include varieties of Cynodon, Zoysia, Kikuyu grass, and seashore paspalum, among others. Warm season grasses have a markedly lower water requirement in summer than cool season grasses, but they tend to be prone to brown-off in winter frosts. Trial plots of 10 different warm season turf grass varieties have been established at Palmerston North to ascertain their turf potential, husbandry requirements and tolerance of winter temperatures. A growth cabinet study of physiological responses to cold exposure is also planned. The project involves collaboration with the New Zealand Sports Turf Institute (NZSTI).
