I have authored and co-authored seven books and more than 20 articles and book chapters on sport and local history. I am the principal author of Seasons of Honour: A Centenary History of Hockey in New Zealand 1902-2002 andSporting Foundations of New Zealand Indians: A Fifty Year History of the New Zealand Indian Sports Association. I was also one of the editors of, and a contributor to Legends in Black: New Zealand Rugby Greats on Why We Win  (2014).  I co-authored Sport and the New Zealanders, a general history of Sport in New Zealand with Greg Ryan in 2018. Subsequent works include Sport Development in Action: Plan, Programme and Practice (Alec Astle, Sarah Leberman and Geoff Watson) which was published by Routledge in 2019 and Will to Win: New Zealand Netball Greats on Team Culture and Leadership (Lana Mcarthy, Andy Martin and Geoff Watson) which was published by Massey University Press in 2020. With Margaret Tennant and Kerry Taylor I was part of the editorial team for City at the Centre: A History of Palmerston North published by Massey University Press in 2020. I contributed a chapter on sport and leisure in Palmerston North to this book and co-authored the chapter on Politics in Palmerston North. 

My research focuses on sports history and local history in New Zealand. These include Sport and the New Zealanders: A History, co-authored with Greg Ryan,a general history of sport in New Zealand (Auckland University Press, 2018), which was awarded the Australian Society of Sports History Award for the best book on Sports History published between 2017 and 2019. I am also one of the editors of and contributors to City at the Centre: A History of Palmerston North which was published in 2020. In 2022 I was named Local Historian of the Year by  the Palmerston North Heritage Trust
