Prof Ngaio Beausoleil BSc, PGCertSc, PhD

Professor

Doctoral Mentor Supervisor
School of Veterinary Science

I was born in British Columbia, Canada and raised in New Zealand but returned to Canada for high school and my first degree (University of Victoria: BSc Biology (with Distinction)). This was followed by several years travelling and playing international rugby for the Canadian Women’s National Team (1997-2001) before returning to NZ to undertake a PhD in animal (sheep) behaviour, physiology and welfare at Massey University. In 2007, I was appointed lecturer in physiology in IVABS and am currently Associate Professor in Applied Ethology and Animal Welfare Science and Co-Director of the Animal Welfare Science and Bioethics Centre (School of Veterinary Science), a World Animal Health Organization collaborating centre.

My research employs behavioural and physiological methods to investigate various aspects of animal welfare. I continue to explore various aspects of domestic animal behaviour and welfare, while also pursuing a strong interest in wild animal welfare and its evaluation. I am particularly interested in the interface between conversation and welfare sciences and the ways in which welfare science can contribute to the success of conservation activities; I am keen to collaborate with conservation scientists with similar interests.

 Major research themes include:

  • Systematic scientific evaluation of animal welfare
  • Conservation Welfare: Welfare impacts associated with wildlife conservation activities
  • Breathlessness in animals
  • Humane methods of 'euthanasia'
  • Welfare impacts of gaseous methods of 'euthanasia', particularly carbon dioxide
  • Humane vertebrate pest control
  • Developmental processes, modulation and alleviation of pain in farm animals
  • Novel methods for evaluating pain in farm animals

As well as research, I teach BVSc and BSc undergraduate students and supervise postgraduate student research. I am a member of the New Zealand Veterinary Journal editorial board, the New Zealand Animal Behaviour and Welfare Consultative Committee, the Massey liaison for the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) and the animal welfare science expert on the Wellington Zoo Trust AW Committee.

Ngaio is Co-Director and Co-Manager of the Animal Welfare Science and Bioethics Centre (School of Veterinary Science), a World Animal Health Organization Collaborating Centre. Her research employs behavioural and physiological methods to investigate various aspects of animal welfare. Major research themes include:

Teaching and Supervision

Graduate Supervision Statement

I am an enthusiatic, engaged and experienced supervisor of postgraduate and undergraduate research students (summer scholars). My goal as a supervisor is to guide and support students to become my collegues in the next generation of researchers - if I succeed, my students are confident, competent and passionate animal welfare researchers in their own right. I am a hands-on supervisor who will challenge you to think deeply and critically about what animals can experience and how people influence their welfare. My strengths as a supervisor are my deep expertise and broad experience in the field of animal welfare and connections with government and industry internationally but also my genuine attention and care for my students as whole people. I will consider supervising committed students in any topic relating to animal welfare but have particular interests in pest and wild animal welfare, breathlessness and gas stunning and animal boredom.
