Dr Barry Palmer BSc, PhD

Senior Lecturer in Life Sciences

Doctoral Supervisor
School of Health Sciences

My research interests are focussed on genetics and gene variation in an effort to bring the enormous power of genetic analysis to bear on real-world problems. The contrast of the relative simplicity of plasmid and bacterial genomes with the complexity of the genetics of heart disease allows broad scope for new and exciting research projects.

Graduate Supervision Statement

As a supervisor I aim to train research degree candidates to use their innovation, intellect, personality and persistence as strengths to successfully achieve their research journey. I expect students to grow in self-confidence and independence as the gain experience.
In undertaking a research project you often learn as much about yourself as the topic you are researching. I have supervised a number of PhD, Hons and Masters students at three NZ universities. My areas of interest include Molecular Environmental Microbiology, Pseudomonas plasmid biology and Genetic and Plasma Biomarkers of Prognosis in Heart Disease.

Dr Barry Palmer is available for Masters and Doctorial supervision.
