Prof Aj Ali BSc(Hons), MSc, PhD

Professor of Sport and Exercise Science/Associate Dean - International

Doctoral Mentor Supervisor
School of Sport, Exercise and Nutrition

Ajmol completed his PE and Sport Science degree at Loughborough University (UK) in 1998. As an Undergraduate student he managed to help out on a couple of football-related PhD studies and his passion for Sport Science research was ignited! He subsequently stayed on for an MSc in Sports Science (Pass with Distinction; 1999) and, for his thesis project, investigated soccer skill and strength performance with and without fluid ingestion. Ajmol’s MSc thesis won him the prestigious Gatorade Sport Science Institute (GSSI) Prize which also helped him secure the only Faculty Doctoral studentship awarded that year. For the next three years Ajmol conducted a series of soccer-related studies, under the tutelage of Prof Clyde Williams, and he graduated with a PhD in 2002. He has presented all of his PhD studies at various conferences around the world and a number of published papers have resulted from the work.

Following the completion of his degree Ajmol completed a 6-month study investigating the effects of wearing compression stockings on various physiological and perceptual parameters in recreational runners. This work was funded by DuPont (now Invista) and Ajmol has since secured funding (by the same group) to continue the work.

Ajmol started at Massey University in 2003 and is currently an Associate Professor in Sport and Exercise Science at the Auckland Campus. Ajmol was instrumental in setting up the Sport and Exercise Science Laboratory at Auckland and has also previously been Major Leader for Sport and Exercise Science. Ajmol currently supervises a number of PhD and MSc students and is also involved in various promotional and consultancy initiatives on behalf of the School of Sport, Exercise and Nutrition and Massey University. Ajmol is also Associate Dean, International for College of Health.

Ajmol's main research interests include performance and physiology of team sports - especially football (soccer) - ergogenic aids and supplementation, and exercise for children. Ajmol collaborates with fellow exercise and sport scientists, food scientists, nutritionists and biochemists.

Project Title: Carbohydrate mouth rinse and cycling performance

Mouth rinsing with a carbohydrate (CHO) solution (standard sports drinks) has been shown to enhance exercise performance in some but not all studies. A possible reason for the equivocal findings could relate to participants being in a fed state thereby limiting the potential ergogenic impact of sensing CHO in the mouth. However, in a fasted and glycogen-reduced state, in the present study, mouth rinsing with a CHO solution did not show any performance enhancements relative to a placebo control. CHO ingestion, on the other hand, enabled participants to increase power output during exercise. Plasma insulin and glucose concentrations were higher in the CHO ingestion trial suggesting possible glycogen sparing; estimated CHO oxidation rates were also higher in this trial relative to placebo control and CHO mouth rinse trials. Our data suggests that under these conditions CHO ingestion is superior to CHO mouth rinsing for moderately trained male cyclists.

Project Title: Sensory evaluation of sports drinks during exercise

Sensory testing of beverages usually takes place in a laboratory setting using trained panellists. However, to make it more applicable to real-life settings, it is more appropriate to undertake sensory testing of sports drinks during exercise. This study assessed sensory perceptions of various formulations of sports drinks before, during and after exercise using recreational exercisers. We found that perceptions of sweetness increased during exercise whereas perceptions of saltiness was reduced. The low-carbohydrate high-electrolyte solution showed the greatest changes in sensory perceptions between non-exercise and exercise conditions indicating that what is preferred at rest may not be true during exercise.

Teaching and Supervision

Teaching Statement

Undergraduate (100, 200 and 300-level) and postgraduate teaching; postgraduate student supervision (Honours, Postgraduate Diploma, MSc and PhD)

Graduate Supervision Statement

I have a relaxed style of supervision, I encourage peer-to-peer learning within my research team, and strive to upskill my students to become independent learners. I am a stickler for detail and provide support where required - and, seek support from elsewhere if necessary. All students will have one or more co-supervisors, and occasionally external/inmternationl co-supervisors as well; I believe in a team approach to help facilitite learning on a number of levels.
