Research Interests

My research explores the role of governance in building resilient and sustainable communities, with a focus on coastal communities and the role of land-use planning, collaboration, conflict resolution, and science, policy and practice in managing natural hazard risks.

It is clustered around three themes: (i) Natural hazards planning and risk governance, with a focus on disaster risk reduction and post-disaster recovery; (ii) Adapting to climate change; and (iii) Integrated coastal management and coastal governance.

Teaching Statement

My current teaching centres on natural hazards planning, risk, resilience and sustainability. I teach undergraduate (132.217) and postgraduate (132.751) courses in this field. I also teach an undergraduate course (132.318) on public participation, public disputes and conflict resolution, with a focus on community-based planning interventions. These courses align with and are founded on my scholar-practitioner work with communities as they seek to navigage the challenges of the Anthropocene - a human-dominated era in which turbulence, disruption and surprise are the 'new normal'. The upshot is that communities face complexity, dynamism, uncertainty and contestation in local decision-making. Moreover, urgent transformative action is necessary to future proof communities in this era.
