Dr Katherine Holt BSc, PhD

Senior Research Officer

Doctoral Supervisor
School of Agriculture and Environment

I spend roughly half my time teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and the other half performing research and commercial pollen analysis. My main research interests are around applying pollen analysis to reconstruct ancient vegetation and other aspects of the environment, and also in developing systems for the automated identification of pollen. I am the primary palynologist involved in the ongoing development of the Classifynder automated palynology system. I have also developed an interest in airborne pollen analysis, and run a Burkard airborne pollen sampler from my building on the Manawatu Campus. In addition, I perform commercial analysis of pollen from honey samples, to aid beekeepers and honey retailers in quality assessment of their products.

Current research projects include:

·         Applying the Classifynder to differentiate fossil pollen

·         Developing a pollen-based proxy for UV radiation in New Zealand

·         Pollen as age control in late Holocene fluvial sediments

I actively collaborate with researchers at GNS Science, Landcare Research, University of Waikato, NIWA, CSIRO, St Andrews University (UK), Aberystwyth University (UK).

Roles and Responsibilities

Co-Chair Science Programmes Review

Geography Major Leader

Science Programmes Committee

Geoscience Society of NZ Vice President

Editorial Board – Palynology Journal

I have been employed as Massey academic since completing my PhD in 2008, and was recently promoted to Senior lecturer at the start of 2016. I am the leader for the undergraduate Geography teaching programme here at Massey, and the Laboratory Manager for our Palynology lab. My research interests focus on pollen analysis (palynology) and reconstructing past environments. I have 12 years’ experience working with pollen, and I now provide commercial pollen analysis services, including analysis of honey samples.

Research Expertise

Research Interests

My main research interests focus on palynology (pollen analysis) in New Zealand and the Chatham Islands, Quaternary tephrochronology and cryptotephrochronology of the Chatham Islands, and Quaternary geology and environmental reconstructions. I have a strong interest in the Quaternary history and geology of the Chatham Islands, and the wider New Zealand region. I am also involved in testing and development of automated systems for the counting and classification of pollen.
