Dr Jasper Mbachu PhD, MBA, MSc Construction Management, BSc (First Class Hons)

Senior Lecturer

School of Engineering and Advanced Technology

Jasper is a senior lecturer and coordinator of the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in construction in the School of Engineering and Advanced Technology, College of Sciences, Massey University.

Jasper has over 18 years of university teaching experience in Nigeria, South Africa and New Zealand. He has over fourteen years of construction experience as a quantity surveyor, contracts manager and project director for the development of many building and civil engineering projects in the U.S, Nigeria and South Africa.

Jasper has published extensively in leading journals and has presented numerous research papers at international conferences. He has won numerous academic awards, including being a Fellow of the Education Trust of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, UK, in 2001. He currently serves on a number of boards including the Northern Chapter Boards of the New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors and the New Zealand Institute of Building. He also participates actively as a member of the Sector Reference Group for the New Zealand Productivity Partnership Board. He is a member of a number of professional bodies including the California Chapters of the Construction Management Association of America and the Design-Procurement-Construction Specific Interest Group of the Project Management Institute.

Completed projects included residential building foundation underpinning projects in Lancaster and Palmdale – two suburbs of the Los Angeles Counties. Key tasks included the engagement and coordination of the subcontractors for the following subcontract works: waterproofing of basements for the buildings, installation of foundation drainage, underpinnings and repairs of concrete foundations and installation of basement drainage channels. Preliminary consulting services included foundation load tests to verify anchor performance and load bearing capacity to meet engineer’s specifications, excavation for the footing and slab repair units, chasing vertical sides of footings, slab coring, drilling for bolt anchors, installation of helical anchors and foundation brackets.

    Quantity Surveyor, December 1999 – February 2001. Duties included cost and financial management of the project, subcontract management, monthly claims and cost reporting, and final accounts.
