I am an Associate Professor and Programme Leader for the Earth Science programme, and Manager of the Environmental Management programme. I have a good track record with numbers of postgraduate students supervised across my research interests. I have long-term collaborations with colleagues, both nationally and internationally, that have resulted in a number of publications, and regularly present papers at national and international conferences.I have also developed international linkages, working in laboratories in Australia and the USA, together with involvement in field work in Vanuatu. I have organised 3 national conferences and been involved in organising two international conferences. I am a past president of the Geosciences Society of NZ and was a member of FOSTS, the interim board of the Royal Society during its restructuring. I have recieved a Prince and Princess of Wales Award for overseas study and a Massey University Research team Medal. I am a member of: Taranaki Seismic and Volcanic Advisory Group, Central Plateau Volcanic Advisory Group, Massey University Emergency Management Team and the Professional Development Subcommittee, International Association of Emergency Managers, Oceania Region.
My research activity is diverse, ranging from the application of volcanic petrology and geochemistry to volcanic hazards and magma processes, emergency management, metal uptake by plants through to mine reclamation. I have had an active involvement with the mining industry in research and as a reclamation consultant since 1987 and hold a current CPAg (Certified Agricultural Practioner) certification. I have published over 90 journal articles and book chapters, two in Nature, I teach courses in mineralogy and petrology, structural geology land use evaluation, emergency management and environmental management. I also manage a mineralogical analysis laboratory (FTIR, XRD and microprobe).
