Dr McCalman is a Senior Research Fellow Central Queensland University where she co-leads the Centre for Indigenous Health Equity Research with Dr Roxanne Bainbridge.

She is a leading public health researcher, recognised for her extensive research on the interactions between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians with schools, workplaces, health services and other community contexts which enable resilience, empowerment and wellbeing.

Her papers have focussed on Aboriginal mental health and wellbeing, youth health, maternal and child health, health services research, integrated care, health promotion and implementation research.

Her methodological expertise lies particularly in participatory and action-oriented quality improvement research approaches; grounded theory; systematic literature reviews; and research transfer and implementation.

Her PhD was conferral in 2013; for this she won the Dean’s Award for Research Higher Degree Excellence.  She has been successful as Lead/Chief Investigator on 20 grants, including a NHMRC fellowship (GNT1113392) and four competitive grants (NHMRC GNT1076774; NHMRC GNT1078927; ARC IN150100011; GNT1164251). She won the Central Queensland University, Vice Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Researchers in 2018.

She has published two scholarly books and  77 peer-reviewed articles in national/international peer-reviewed journals and produced 26 reports for government and community-controlled organisations. Half of her publications are first or single-authored. Janya regularly reviews for international and national journals. 

She has lectured in undergraduate public health, substance misuse and community development courses at a national and local level, and co-convened an international Leadership in Mental Health Course. She also supervises and mentors several Indigenous and non-Indigenous research students.
