Massey Institute of Food Science and Technology (MIFST) is the leading provider of high quality education, research and innovation for the food sector. It is largest academic/research grouping in food sciences in the Southern Hemisphere.

Our graduates develop theoretical and practical knowledge and are in high demand in the international food industry.

Short courses, including brewing, are available to industry and the general public. We also have food technology kits for schools to support food technology teaching.

The Institute maintains clusters of world class expertise and critical mass in selected areas of food and nutritional sciences to deliver high quality and relevant research to the global food sectors.

Student opportunities and exchange

China food technology exchange programme

Massey University’s exchange programme with Zhejiang University in China allows food science and technology students to study in New Zealand for one semester.

You will undertake the exchange during Semester 2, which begins in July, and will study part of the Bachelor of Food Technology with Honours programme, under the Food Product Technology major.

Projects with industry

As part of your food technology study at Massey you may be able to work on an industry project, with one of our business partners. Subjects like food technology, engineering, construction and computer science all have 'capstone' (final year) projects with industry where you will work on a real-world project.

Study food technology in Singapore

In partnership with Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), Massey University offers the Bachelor of Food Technology with Honours majoring in Food Product Technology at SIT's Dover Campus.

Students with approved diplomas from a polytechnic in Singapore can apply for exemptions and entry to Year 2. All other students, including A level students can apply for entry to Year 1.

The BFoodTech(Hons) degree is jointly awarded by both universities and is equivalent to Massey’s New Zealand degree programme.

The Centre for Postharvest and Refrigeration Research does research and consultancy to provide cost-effective solutions to industry problems. We work on a wide range of fruit, vegetable, cut flower, seafood and aquaculture products.

New Zealand Food Safety Science and Research Centre

The Centre, hosted by Massey University, focuses on better ways of detecting hazards in the food production chain and reducing the risk of food-borne illness to consumers.
