Entrance requirements for Study Abroad and Exchange students applying to study at Massey University

To be admitted into a Massey University programme applicants need to meet both the academic and English language requirements.

How to apply for the Study Abroad/Exchange programme

Academic requirements for Study Abroad and Exchange applicants

Each applicant is considered on an individual basis. As a general rule students should have:
  • Completed at least one year of successful university level study in their home country, and have permission from their home university to undertake study at Massey University for credit towards their home university degree.
  • A cumulative GPA for all higher education work of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale) is required, or the equivalent. Students with a cumulative GPA below the stipulated level will be considered where special circumstances exist.

Student Exchange applicants should additionally:

  • Be officially nominated as an exchange student by their home university and been pre-accepted for an exchange place by the Massey University International Office.

English language entrance requirements

Students from a country where English is not the first language must obtain a minimum English Language competency level. Some programmes require a higher level of English Language competency than the minimum requirement indicated.

Massey University recognises the following English Language examinations:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
    Only Academic IELTS scores are acceptable. A copy of your academic IELTS scores is acceptable as Massey is able to verify your results online.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
    A copy of your TOEFL scores is acceptable as Massey is able to verify your results online.

Test scores for English proficiency are valid for two years from the test date.

If you have taken a test other than IELTS or TOEFL, include it with your Application for Admission as an International Student so that it may be considered.

The minimum English Language proficiency for Undergraduate Study

IELTS (Academic)

Minimum overall band score of 6.0 with no individual band score less than 5.5.

TOEFL

Paper-based test (P) - Minimum score of 550, TWE 4.0; or Computer-based Test (C) - Minimum score 213, Essay Rating 4.0; or Internet-based Test (iBT) - 80 (minimum writing 19).

DAAD (For German students only)

A minimum B grade in each section.

The minimum English Language proficiency for Postgraduate Study

IELTS (Academic)

Minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0

For PhD applicants, some Colleges may specify a higher level of attainment.

TOEFL

Paper-based test (P) - Minimum score of 575, TWE 4.0; or Computer-based Test (C) - Minimum score 232, Essay Rating 4.0; or
Internet-based Test (iBT) - 90 (minimum writing 20)

For PhD applicants, some Colleges may specify a higher level of attainment.

DAAD (For German students only)

A minimum B grade in each section.

For PhD applicants, some Colleges may specify a higher level of attainment.
