Tuition fees, living expenses and other costs of study
International Students planning to study at Massey University in New Zealand need to consider and budget for the following:
Programme tuition fees
Tuition fees are normally calculated on a "per paper" basis (with the exception of programmes which have a fixed programme tuition fee) and the actual tuition fee will depend on the number of papers enrolled in and the category from which the paper selection is made. For example, the Bachelor of Business Studies degree will cost more overall if a student enrols in a couple of elective papers from the College of Sciences. Likewise, a Bachelor of Science degree will cost less overall if a student enrols in some elective papers from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
To view the tuition fees for International Students, please select from the following:
- Postgraduate study
- Undergraduate study
- Study Abroad Programme
- Pre-Degree, Foundation and English Language Studies
Non-tuition fees
Non-tuition fees are a compulsory fee payable by all students enrolled at Massey University. These administrative charges include: an Enrolment fee, Student Services levy, Building levy, Recreation Centre levy, Alumni fee and a Student Association fee.
The Non-tuition fees range from NZD$680 - $1,500 per academic year (February to November) and the fee charged is dependent on the Massey campus a student is enrolled. Please note, for students who enrol in a programme starting in semester two (July) and continuing into the following year, will attract Non-tuition fees for both years of enrolment.
More information on Non-tuition fees can be found here.
Practical work service fees
Some programmes incur a small practical work service fee. This practical work service fee applies to programmes that have a practical or fieldwork component. The fee is used to assist in finding placements for students which are a requirement of the programme.
Course component fees
Some individual papers incur a small course component fee, which is in addition to the tuition fee for that paper. The course component fee may include study materials, equipment or field trips as applicable for that paper.
Medical and travel insurance fee
All International Students must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand. Students can either have the insurance cover arranged by Massey or produce evidence that they have their own approved insurance policy
Textbooks and supplies
Textbooks can be quite costly however students may be able to purchase compulsory textbooks second-hand and the University‘s Library stocks several copies of compulsory and recommended textbooks for lending purposes. Students should budget for approximately NZD$500 per semester for textbooks and supplies.
Estimated living expenses
It is estimated students will need on average NZ$390 to $470 per week or NZ$15,000 to $18,000 per academic year to cover their living expenses while studying in New Zealand. Individual student costs will vary depending on a student’s own personal requirements and also the Massey campus chosen.
