Global Student Athlete - Cricket

NZCTCC fields.jpg GSA - Cricket offers a unique opportunity for serious cricket players to join the Massey Cricket School.  The School is part of the Manawatu Centre of Cricket Excellence (MCCE), a regional cricket programme that includes prominent local organisations such as the Manawatu Cricket Association. The MCCE is managed by Jacob Oram, a former member of New Zealand’s national cricket team.

A major attraction of the MCCE is the world’s first and New Zealand’s only indoor grass cricket-specific training facility.  The New Zealand Community Trust Cricket Centre provides players with the opportunity to train year-round on natural grass pitches.  This offers simulation benefits that artificial turf cannot provide.

You will receive coaching and mentoring from Jacob Oram and other former international players, access to high-performance presentations, weekly cricket sessions at MCCE training centres, and a membership to the Massey Sport and Recreation Centre.  You are also enrolled in GSA – Elite Sport Services and receive all of those additional benefits as well.

This programme is open to any study abroad or exchange students studying at Massey University's Manawatu campus in Palmerston North.  It is available during Semester One and Semester Two.

Internationally Recognized Coach

Jacob Oram.jpg GSA – Cricket is led by Jacob Oram.  His long career in professional cricket and on-going passion for developing other athletes make him an ideal coach and mentor for members of GSA – Cricket.

“Sport offers a wonderful opportunity to follow your dreams, travel the world, meet new people and experience things you never knew even existed.  I was fortunate enough to live the life of a professional cricketer for nearly 17 years, and while that was amazing, I also appreciated that the duration of a high performing athlete’s career is fickle and unfortunately, in many cases, over too soon.

Upon leaving school, I enrolled at Massey University and started studying towards a Bachelor of Business Studies.  Not long after cricket started to take off and the commitment required a lot more of my time and attention, I thankfully made the decision to continue studying even if it was just one course per year.  So, when my body started giving up and I retired from playing cricket, I had put the effort in and had a degree to put to use in my new, post-playing life.

I loved playing cricket and getting to score a Test hundred at Lords – the traditional home of cricket – as well as playing in three Cricket World Cups were undoubtedly highlights of my career.  However, I have also grown to enjoy life outside of cricket since retiring and now get fulfilment from working at Massey University in cricket development, and sport advancement roles.”
