All interns will be based in Wellington for their four-week internships. Wellington is the seat of the New Zealand government and has been called the “coolest little capital in the world” by Lonely Planet. It serves as headquarters to a number of national organisations and the Disaster Hub, a governmental, community, and university collaboration launched by the Joint Centre for Disaster Research. The facilities and support services of Massey's Wellington campus are available to everyone throughout your placement.
The insights you gain from working in a foreign agency and learning how problems faced in your own country are handled in another part of the world will be invaluable throughout your career. This will be particularly beneficial as you look for jobs after graduation or apply for graduate school.
Everyone will stay at a backpacker-style hostel in Wellington. This setup allows all of you to stay together over the four weeks, even though you will be out at separate sites during the day.
Your Disaster Risk and Emergency Management Internship Placement Form will be used to place you with the internship host that is the best fit given your background, skills, and interests. Our goal is to pair you with an organisation that will provide you with relevant experiences and where your talents can be used to benefit the agency and the community it supports. Our internship hosts serve as the backbone of the New Zealand government’s response to dealing with large scale emergencies.
City and district councils

The academic portion of your internship will be assessed on context exploration essay (10%), internship report (20%), self-reflective journal (30%), and learning portfolio presentation (40%). You can expect to spend 120-160 hours on your placement and associated project work.
