“I have a passion for flying which comes from growing up under the Whenuapai flight path. I also enjoy travelling and experiencing new places and cultures. A BAv for me meant being paid to do something out of the ordinary and something which I enjoy.
I decided on Massey for the chance to gain my pilot licences while completing a degree. Also to move out of home and start grown up life (not that student life really is that!)
The BAv program was a big step up from school. It was pretty intense initially studying and finishing exams in rapid succession. The longer term dates and larger workload compared to other uni courses was all worth it to be able to fly though.
While studying I was able to take part in one of the first Air NZ Airline Integration Courses. This was in Christchurch and involved a practical component on the Mt Cook ATR sim, introducing multi crew and other commercial concepts. While I was down there I was also able to do a type rating on a Piper Cub, so the days where spent flying a complex turboprop sim and evenings flying a vintage tail dragger.
Since graduating I've moved to the Top End of Australia. I've flown for a couple of skydive operators in and around Darwin. I'm now flying for Katherine Aviation, a charter and scenic operator and I'm based in Katherine. Just recently I have started a supervisory/ training role where I fly alongside new pilots and help them reach the company standard before they are checked to line.
The great thing about aviation though is that you never know where you might end up and what opportunities are ahead!”
