Graduated in 2010
People & Cultural Advisor- World Vision NZ
“I thoroughly enjoyed the Communications papers I took whilst completing my Bachelor of Business, Major in Communication Management. I found my lecturers to be a great source of inspiration not only on the learning side of things but also with their experience they were able to share…..”
I am currently the People & Culture Advisor at New Zealand's largest NGO, World Vision NZ. It's a dream come true to be able to work the Human Resources field coupled with my passion for working with a not-for-profit organisation that really makes a difference in the lives of those who need it most. I work to support our large number of staff who work for our support office here in New Zealand. My day varies greatly with project work, employment relations, recruitment and staff focused initiatives.
Having grown up on the Hibiscus Coast and attended Westlake Girls High School, Massey University seemed like a natural choice in terms of location for me. Massey University offered me the opportunity to pursue a degree in Business and Communication without the hassle of travelling in to Auckland University or moving down to Wellington or Otago. I knew that Massey offered an excellent Business programme and flexible options to take papers internally and extramurally which worked really well for me.
The programme of work required over the three years at Massey was comprehensive and the material is still very relevant in the work I do today (I even refer to text books from the course when working through organisational change functions in my current role!).. One thing I found really stood out for me was the ability to work timetables and schedules around external factors, like work, Massey was always really accommodating yet I never felt my degree was compromised in any way at all. I was top in class for Managing Communication Technology (which is interesting as I now manage our World Vision NZ intranet and internal communications across our Auckland, Wellington & Christchurch offices).
My degree from Massey University is the reason I have my job today. I have a background in recruitment and every day I see skilled employees or candidates who really miss out on furthering their career because of their lack of tertiary education. I remind them it's not the piece of paper (degree certificate) they're working towards it's the information, understanding, commitment and processes you learn along the way that make the difference. The opportunities my degree from Massey offer are endless but for me the opportunity to move straight into the recruitment/Human Resources field from uni was priceless. You never work a day in your life if you're doing what you love - and I get to do what I love every day.
I would highly recommend completing a Business, Communications or Marketing degree at Massey University. I found my time at Massey invaluable and gained some great life experiences through the great lecturers, uni colleagues and varying course structures. For someone who is looking for a quality degree that really educates you about what business, communications and marketing looks like in the real world then Massey is definitely the place to go!
