“My degree has given me the confidence to open my own business and work for myself, I would never have been able to do it otherwise...”

With a passion for the written word, Sharron wanted to do a degree that would help her forge a new career in the area of communications or public relations. After several years in the IT industry Sharron chose to do a Bachelor of Communication, electing a major of Communication Management/Journalism Studies and a minor of Media Studies.

“Massey University supported me every step of the way. When I needed help, encouragement or support I got it. I just felt like they were behind me and wanted to see me succeed. Studying as a mature student and a mum can be a challenge but there are so many resources to help you through it,” says Sharron.

The communication management major was an ideal combination of skill development and theory for Sharron, providing all the essentials of core communication principles, business communication and technology. The Journalism component provided a fascinating insight into the industry, simultaneously helping Sharron to develop her writing skills and build her confidence.

“Every paper contributed to my writing skills in some way and it was really good to know that my writing was industry standard.”

After graduating Sharron went to work for Porter Novelli as a senior account executive specialising in technology PR and worked on one of their major accounts, Microsoft. Sharron then went on to open her own business Optimise Communications which provides copywriting, digital marketing and project management services to a strategic alliance of graphic and web design agencies.

“My degree has given me the confidence to open my own business and work for myself, I would never have been able to do it otherwise,” says Sharron.
