Bachelor of Communication (Public Relations)
Communications Advisor-Horizons Regional Council
"The skills I gained as part of the degree were a big help in securing contract copywriting work with a local design company which soon turned into a full time comms role…."
I currently work as a Communications Advisor for Horizons Regional Council. It’s a varied role involving a bit of everything from organising events to media liaison, filming and editing videos, coordinating publications, speech writing, content management, working with social media, advertising and more…..
I’ve always loved writing and media so when I discovered Massey’s Bachelor of Communication it sounded like the perfect fit. After graduating, I secured a contract copywriting work with a local design company which soon turned into a full time comms role. In this role, I worked with clients as diverse as kindergartens and roller derby, and even picked up an industry award for sustained public relations before moving to Horizons.
I found Massey lecturers to be really supportive. They often went out of their way to provide additional opportunities for real-world experience which stood me in good stead when applying for my first degree-related job.
I would strongly encourage anyone looking at studying communications or marketing to make the most of opportunities offered through Massey.
Editor’s note: Ally is too modest to mention it, but she also won the Public Relations Institute of New Zealand award for sustained excellence in public relations for her work, completed in her first job after graduation, on a strategic communication plan for a kindergarten association. Her plan is now to be included in a best-practice guide to public relations planning, in a leading Australasian textbook.
