Senior Account Executive Head
Pead PR, Auckland
By far the most memorable and influential experience I had at Massey was my international exchange…
I am now a Senior Account Executive at Pead PR in Auckland. I work with a number of technology clients (including Samsung, Orcon, Kordia, EMC & RSA), I also work with the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ).
My role is made up of:
Media liaison - pitching feature ideas and product placement opportunities for clients.
Writing - media releases, promotional product placement copy PR Planning - creating briefing documents/PR plans (constructing annual and quarterly plans for each client)
Event management & hosting - we host launch events and media familiarisation events to create hype and awareness for our clients.
Events I work on include: launching new product offerings. We also work on large scale events for RIANZ, including the Vodafone Music Awards.
By far the most memorable and influential experience I had at Massey was my international exchange. I travelled to Los Angeles to study at UCLA for six months. It had fantastic communication courses, which helped develop my research, writing and negotiation skills.
While there I worked as a graduate researcher for the UCLA Communication Department and I also interned for a Beverly Hills PR company, Fingerprint Communications. Fingerprint specialised in consumer and celebrity PR so I was able to meet and work with a lot of influential celebrity clientele and brands, accounts I interned on include: Air NZ Snoop Dogg/Rico video, Kardashian Collection, Oakley - and various other consumer and fashion brands.
My degree has given me confidence - particularly in writing. This is a critical skill to have in PR, much of my job is made up of writing (media releases, media/feature pitches communication plans, debriefs, reports).
My degree also gave me the opportunity to gain practical experience - both here and abroad. In the PR industry I cannot stress enough how important it is to have practical experience. You need to know what your industry is about and how to communicate effectively to a wide variety of people and businesses. This is a skill you can only gain through practice.
The Internship Paper in the Communication degree at Massey allowed me to work hands-on alongside PR professionals to develop my own campaign and PR planning skills. On top of this, the international exchange program allowed me to gain that extra bit of experience in a whole new context - which goes a long way to differentiate you from other graduates.
My degree in Communication has already allowed me to achieve many of my personal and professional goals. I was able to travel to Los Angeles, work with celebrities and study in a world class international university.
Through the practical paper offerings I was allowed to be involved in hands on PR activity which gave me invaluable experience which ultimately led to me meeting my business idols and landing a job in a respected Auckland PR company.
Without the support of the Massey Communication staff and the diverse course offerings, I would not have been able to gain the wide variety of experience and knowledge I did during my three years of study and I would not be where I am today.
