An industry conference is difficult to review as an organiser. Everything goes passed too fast! There's never enough time to talk to everyone, and never enough time to absorb what has been said; the insights being offered and their implications. But from my perspective, the conference sessions at Awapuni were fantastic. Particularly interesting, important and compelling on the first day were the speakers in the Market and Consumer session (e.g. Mr Chen, Diane Rae, Natalie Dang, Scottie Chapman), followed by the scientists in the AgResearch-MBIE session. But thoughout the conference there other moments when the less tangible, and perhaps more meaningful, exchanges were underway. The photo above captures one such moment. We had 115 diners to the conference dinner held in the main room of Massey's newly renovated Sir Geoffrey Perrin Building. David Wallace and Joanie Williams entertained us with David first reflecting on the previous times that he'd trod the boards as a student in the room in which we were seated, and calling out all those that had done the same. And then Joanie, surprising us with the harrowing, heart warming but ultimately successful tale of Origin Earth's genesis. In the midst of this frivolity were little moments when one senses that what we have is not a disparate group of business people bent on exchange and profitable gains, but a community that shares a bond.
