Photography is a dynamic discipline with a multiplicity of exciting career options and outcomes. At the College of Creative Arts, photography is taught by some of New Zealand’s leading photographic practitioners. Staff have significant research profiles and represent New Zealand’s leading teaching nexus for photographic design. Facilities include professional photographic studios, state of the art digital suites and printers with expert technical support, and in addition many alternative and historical wet-based photographic processes are supported.
The Diploma in Photography has a long history at the college, and, before that, at Wellington Polytechnic. Graduates are performing at the top of their fields in the worlds of commercial, fashion and portraiture photography.
The Diploma in Photography is an intensive two-year full-time course with a specific photographic focus. The programme spans the major concepts and skills associated with professional, documentary and fine art photography. Graduates from the Diploma have made careers in many areas of the photographic industry. The Diploma in Photography is particularly suited to highly motivated participants who already have some life experience.
First Year: This year introduces students to the studio, the darkroom and the digital environment. Subject areas that students will be asked to engage with include portraiture, the street, digital montage, and documentary, while also gaining an understanding of the history of photography.
Second Year: In the second year students will be introduced to alternative photographic processes and expected to develop long-term projects in both the documentary and commercial areas. Students are also required to participate in a group photographic project with their classmates.
