Maori visual art plays a leading role in the development of New Zealand’s unique visual identity through fine arts, crafts and design. It has helped to shape the images, objects and spaces New Zealanders, regard as an expression of their unique culture and dual heritage.
New Zealanders take pride in those Maori forms that represent them both here, at home and overseas. This programme will encourage and assist students in developing their own voice as an artist or designer, harnessing their potential to contribute to the field of contemporary Maori visual arts.
Programme Content
The programme will introduce students to a world of creative visual exploration, embracing the importance of the New Zealand context and encouraging cultural traditions, values and expression. Within a range of contemporary learning environments, including wananga-type situations, students will develop skills, understanding and knowledge through the study of Maori cultural values, traditions, issues and artistic expression.
