About the College
The Massey University College of Education was established in 1996 after the merger of the existing Faculty of Education and Palmerston North College of Education.
Today the College offers programmes and qualifications in Education and Professional Education from certificate to doctoral level. The mission of the College of Education is to provide quality education designed to promote excellence in teaching and associated professional activities. The College offers a full complement of innovative, research-based qualifications and professional development programmes that enhance the skills and knowledge of an up-to-date educator.
The comprehensive range of programmes offered, and the extensive research and professional development activities of staff, distinguish the College of Education at Massey University from other education colleges in New Zealand. Specifically, the following major qualities characterise the distinctive nature of the College:
- the most comprehensive research-based post-graduate programmes of any New Zealand education college;
- the largest percentage of doctorally qualified academic staff of any education college in New Zealand;
- the largest internationally recognized research quantum in New Zealand in children’s literacy learning;
- the largest regionally recognized research quantum in New Zealand in mathematics education;
- the largest nationally recognized research quantum in New Zealand in inclusive education and adult education;
- the only School of Maori and Multicultural Studies in Education (Te Uru Maraurau);
- the only college of education offering early years, primary, and secondary initial teacher education programmes both on-campus as well as completely online;
- the only college of education to offer a 4-year primary teacher education programme with a complete emphasis on teacher education and related areas;
- the only educational psychology professional training programmes;
- the only distinctive, research-led professional development programmes for schools and early years centres;
- the only four-year entry-level speech-language therapy programme that is transdisciplinary in form and focused on addressing the needs of a biculturally and multiculturally diverse population;

- the only Postgraduate Diploma in Evaluation;
- the only college of education, through its MUSAC business, to develop and market leading-edge software for 10 key school administration tasks (eg, timetabling, assessment, absences, library, assets, finances).
