Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching
Massey University in partnership with the University of Canterbury is offering a Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching. Six specialist endorsements will be offered. These include:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (offered by Massey University)
- Blind and Vision Impairment (offered by Massey University)
- Deaf and Hearing Impairment (offered by Canterbury University)
- Early Intervention (offered by Canterbury University)
- Gifted and Talented (offered by Massey University)
- Learning and Behaviour (offered by both Massey University and Canterbury University)
This qualification adopts an inquiry-based interprofessional learning model using a range of distance and blended flexible learning options for all students regardless of location. Interprofessional practice reflects the need for interaction, communication and collaboration across and within specialty disciplines. Participants in this course will be learning with, from, and about each other in an interdisciplinary community context.

Graduate Profile
Graduates of this programme will develop the skills to:
- understand the elements of interdisciplinary practice and work effectively with colleagues as part of a wider community of interprofessional practice;
- exhibit cultural responsibility;
- work in partnership with family/whanau;
- assess learning differences and strengths;
- apply solution-focused approaches to individual programme planning;
- demonstrate the qualities of a reflective practitioner.
Entry Requirements
Entry to the programme requires a relevant professional qualification and a New Zealand undergraduate degree or equivalent.
Delivery
This qualification will be offered part-time. It will be taught in distance learning mode with contact courses and e-learning programme.
Programme Structure
Students enrolled in the programme will complete four compulsory papers.
Year One:
-
a core theory and foundations paper (30 credits)
-
a specialist theory and foundations paper (30 credits)
Year Two:
-
a specialist evidence-based practice paper (30 credits)
-
a specialist practicum paper (30 credits)
NOTE: Specialist relates to the areas of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Blind and Vision Impairment, Deaf and Hearing Impairment, Early Intervention, Gifted and Talented, Learning and Behaviour.
Workload
The total amount of time for each paper is 12.5 hours per week.

Enrolments open 1 October and close 30 November 2011.
