Brewing Short Course microbrewery

Massey University holds two day short courses in brewing at the Manawatu (Palmerston North) campus in both April and November.

The course is be run by staff from the School of Food and Nutrition at Massey University. The course offers a comprehensive introduction to Brewing and detail regarding malts, hops, yeast and the process of making good beers.

Two day format for residential short course 

  • Comprehensive Two day "live in" course and one night's accommodation with all meals are supplied.
  • Total cost approximately $950 GST incl.
  • Enrolments for these courses are accepted throughout the year.

Who should attend?

The course is designed for:

Brewery

  • new graduates entering the brewing industry
  • suppliers to the brewery industry
  • craft brewers seeking to further their skills
  • aspiring micro-brewers with an interest in and awareness of brewing processes.

The short course consists of:

  • formal lectures from Massey staff
  • brewing practicals and demonstrations
  • comprehensive manual
  • brew design software
  • course certificate on completion
  • "hands on" throughout, and
  • beer tasting.

  • Understanding of the chemistry of the brewing process.
  • Understanding the role of malt, hops and yeasts in the craft of brewing.
  • Understanding the fermentation process.
  • How to design beers of predictable alcohol content, colour and bitterness.
  • How to prevent faults in beers.
  • Practicalities of making beer at industrial and hobby scale.
  • Valuable networking.

The Massey Microbrewery

Participants will use the 200L Microbrewery at Massey University. The brewery comprises a brew house plus an area of 10 independently temperature-controlled unitanks.

Registration

The registration fee for the two-day course includes lunches, dinners, morning and afternoon teas, and lecture material. Also included is the cost for brewing two beers you have designed, at the 50L and the 200L scale.

The course will be restricted to the first 20 students to enrol and pay their fees. Massey University reserves the right to cancel or reschedule a course because of insufficient numbers, or other unforseen circumstances.
