Nutrition, physical activity and sports performance

The focus of this field of research is the nutritional requirements of physical activity and sport training. Researchers, in collaboration with colleagues in sport and exercise, evaluate the effects of diet modification or supplementation strategies on the performance of the physically active recreational athlete and the elite athlete. Researchers also have a strong interest in the relationship between diet, physical activity levels and health outcomes.

Examples of research

  • Diet modification and supplementation interventions to optimise sport performance
  • Investigation into the relationship between genes and supplementation on performance benefit
  • Micronutrient status in the highly active, e.g. micronutrient loss with heavy sweating
  • Body composition and nutrient status of aesthetic sport participants, e.g. gymnasts, dancers
  • Body composition, body acceptance and reasons for exercising in recreational athlete populations, e.g. runners, triathletes, swimmers
  • Sport nutritional strategies and the effects on current and later health
