The Centre for Postharvest and Refrigeration Research has made real-world improvements in primary sector industries.

  • Development of simple yet accurate methods to predict cooling and freezing rate for products of differing geometry has led to improvements in cooling and freezing systems
  • Improved knowledge of mass and heat transfer has led to improvements in packaging systems for fresh produce
  • Improving storage technologies and predicting storage out turn to improve profitability in kiwifruit, feijoa, berryfruit and sweet potato sectors
  • Development of essential oils as natural microbial suppressants for use after harvest
  • Defining phytochemical changes during processing and storage and the implications of those changes for human health and wellbeing

Research facilities

We have state-of-the-art temperature- and humidity-controlled storage facilities and specialist equipment to support research into improved methods of grading, packaging, storage and transport of highly perishable products.
