The Digesta Group is a group of scientists from a diverse range of backgrounds in a number of academic units at Massey University. They share an interest in the physical processing of digesta within the human gastrointestinal tract. This interest is borne principally out of the need to understand how digesta mixes to allow digestive enzymes to act on nutrient particles, and how the nutrients are transported to cells in the wall of the intestine.
An understanding of these physical processes will enable design of foods that impede rates of nutrient uptake, and hence, for example, lower glycaemic index. Similarly, such understanding will aid in the design of capsules for delivery of pharmaceuticals. Ultimately, it can inform the design of capsule micro-robots that carry fragile drugs directly to the cells that can absorb them.
