Student: Ali van Barneveld
Helping adults and children live happier, healthier and longer lives is Massey graduate Ali van Barneveld’s passion.
That’s why she chose to study the Bachelor of Health Sciences majoring in Sport and Exercise at Massey, which she completed in 2010.
Now, she works as a Community Recreation Programmer at Hutt City Council. Before that, she was employed by Sport Wellington in their Active Communities support team.
"Without having a degree under my belt and the content of my course, I would not have been considered for my role nor would I have the skills to be able to perform the tasks it requires," she says. "Because of my degree I am able to apply everything I learnt academically and practically, passing on my knowledge to others and living out my passion."
Ali loved the learning environment and student culture at Massey.
"I really enjoyed our small class of those studying the major at the time. It made for a great learning experience as we had great relationships with teachers and tutors and they were able to personalise teaching to individual learning style and needs. I also appreciated the support extended to Pasifika students on campus."
Her advice to students wanting to study sport and exercise at Massey is to keep an open mind and give everything a go.
"Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and introduce yourself to the right people. Apply yourself to every aspect of the course because the possibilities of where this degree may take you are vast. Your career is what you make of it, so persist and don’t lose sight of what you want."
