I am a Senior Lecturer in the School of Public Health teaching Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) (hazard management, regulation, employee participation and accident causation) and Projects in OHS. I conduct my research in the Centre for Ergonomics Occupational Safety and Health, currently on evaluation of national OHS incentive programmes, the role of OHS practitioners and worker participation in OHS management. I have 18 years research experience from Denmark and New Zealand in: OHS consequences of new technology and organisational change; OHS management; barriers and opportunities for worker participation. I aim to make my research useful to OHS practitioners, businesses and governmental agencies in their effort to make New Zealand a better place to work.
I have been consultant on the work environment in a Danish trade union for seven years, training managers and health and safety representatives in managing and improving OHS particularly on musculoskeletal problems and psychosocial work environment related to work with computers. I have practiced as an OHS manager in Denmark where I enjoyed implementing a learning safety organisation based on collaboration between frontline managers and worker representatives.
During my career I have been involved in professional organisations for ergonomists and occupational health and safety professionals. I served on the board of Danish Occupational Safety and Health Professionals (1994-2005), on the Nordic Ergonomics Societies board (2001-06, as president 2001-03), as a council member of the International Ergonomics Association (2001-05) and on the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of New Zealand (2007-13).
My research aims at establishing how to efficiently manage and improve Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) at the organisational level and; how external stakeholders can support and influence organisations to do so. This includes research in the following areas:
In the area of OHS management I am specifically interested in how organisations can make their worker participation systems and hazard/risk management processes more effective and efficient.
I am specifically interested in how to manage Musculoskeletal and psychosocial risk factors in organisations.
