My research involves the study of bacterial pathogens. Current projects include:

    • Using next generation sequencing to identify essential genes in the bacterial pathogen Shigella flexneri
    • Using laboratory evolution to investigate genetic and epigenetic changes underlying antibiotic resistance
    • I dabble in a number of other projects that include using DNA sequencing to investigate animal diets, soil metagenomics, and bacteriophage discovery
    • Addtionally, I do consulting work for a New Zealand based start up company that is developing portable qPCR devices.

Dr Heather Hendrickson's lab at Massey University is investigating microbial evolution and bacteriophage biology. We have projects involving the evolution of cell shape and bacterial pathogenicity and a growing interest in the natural parasites of bacteria from bacteriophages (the viruses of bacteria) to protozoa and multicellular predators of bacteria. We use a combination of fluorescent microscopy, flow cytometry, genetics, genomics and microbiology techniques to learn about how microscopic entities affect one another over multiple time scales.

I am a lecturer in marine ecology and a research associate of the Auckland War Memorial Museum. My research is interested in the generation and changing nature of biogeographic, ecological and demographic patterns in the ocean. I specialise in using genetic and genomic data, in combination with ecological data and modelling approaches. Alongside my research I am an active participant in science outreach and community engagement. I also collaborate in several international research consortia, advocating open data, knowledge transfer, and free access to population genetic and spatial seascape genetic analysis tools.

I am a lecturer in Environmental Science / Ecology. My research encompasses approaches to document, measure and protect island biodiversity. I use island vertebrates (snakes, iguanas, parrots) as models to understand changes in population sizes and their relationships to extinction risk. I collaborate with research and wildlife partners from the Galapagos National Park (Ecuador), Norfolk Island National Park (Australia), and the Division of Fish and Wildlife (Norther Mariana Islands). There are a number of research opportunities in my lab that would suit highly motivated students with an interest in biodiversity and conservation biology.

My research is focused on ecology and evolutionary biology, with emphasis on the dynamics of adaptation in microbial populations. Recently my research has focused on cooperation and conflict – how do microbes build societies to mutual benefit of their members, while safeguarding themselves against cheats?

His group combines computational methods and biology to answer questions in the fields of genomics, transcriptomics, and epigenetics, with a focus on gene regulation, non-coding RNAs, and data-driven biomedical discovery. Besides research, Sebastian is also highly interested in the computational and bioinformatics up-skilling of students and scientists. For more information see the lab webpages.

I am an ornithologist and an applied chemist with a deep interest in evolutionary biology. I have followed my interests from New Zealand to South Africa and on the the United States, and I have studied modern and fossil birds, as well as ancient humans, dinosaurs and other groups. I am particularly interested in ancient events that have driven bird evolution. Birds have deep scientific and cultural importance for New Zealand and several species are high priorities for conservation. Exploring the evolutionary origins of New Zealand birds is the priority of my research at Massey University.
