Postgraduate plant science scholarships 

Many of the scholarships below are suitable for postgraduates studying plant science within agriculture or horticulture. While fewer are suitable for those studying plant ecology or biology, some will be appropriate.

Alex C P Chu Trade for Training Scholarship
Closing date: 1 November   
The Alex C P Chu Trade for Training Scholarship provides assistance to students enrolled in either a postgraduate or undergraduate course in agriculture or horticulture at Massey University, and who intends to study overseas as part of their programme.

Allan & Grace Kay Overseas Scholarship
Closing date: 1 February   
For students pursuing postgraduate research in the Agricultural or Veterinary Science fields at an overseas university

C. Alma Baker Postgraduate Scholarship
Closing date: 1 February   
For NZ citizens who are graduates of NZ Universities, who are enrolled or intending to enrol in masterate or doctoral thesis programmes in the fields of agriculture, agriculture-related technologies or the study of rural society.

Camellia Memorial Scholarship
Closing date: 1 October   
For graduate students enrolled at any university intending to study in Horticulture, Agriculture or Science and directed to such disciplines as taxonomy, health or culture of the genus Camellia

Charles Elgar Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March   
For students enrolled full time for a postgraduate degree or diploma in Applied Academic Programme disciplines relevant to agriculture or horticulture.

Clark Fletcher Memorial Citrus Bursary
Closing date: 30 November
For students likely to return benefits to the citrus fruit growing industry

Claude McCarthy Fellowships
Closing date: 1 August   
Claude McCarthy Fellowships assist graduates of any NZ university to travel overseas for a short period to undertake research or present a paper at a conference.

D J McGowan Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March   
For students enrolled full time for a Masterate or Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Academic Programme disciplines relevant to agriculture or horticulture.

Dan Watkins Scholarship in Weed Science
Closing date: 1 October   
Open to all University students undertaking research into the biology and control of weeds in New Zealand.

Ecology Bursary
Closing date: 31 March   
Open to students who are enrolled full-time and are undertaking postgraduate research in Ecology at the Massey University Palmerston North campus.

FAR Postgraduate Scholarship
Closing date: 15 March   
Open to full-time students at Massey University eligible to proceed to or undertaking postgraduate research of value to the New Zealand arable farming sector.

Farmers' Union Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March
For graduates of any NZ University who enrol full time for a postgraduate degree or diploma in Applied Academic Programme disciplines relevant to agriculture or horticulture.

Frank Sydenham Scholarship
Closing date: 3 December   
For students who have attended a State Secondary School in the coastal Bay of Plenty area, who are undertaking postgraduate study in Horticulture, Agriculture, Forestry and related pursuits

George Mason Charitable Trust Scholarship
Closing date: 8 February
The Scholarship is to be awarded to advance the study of the natural environment, archaeology and social history of the Taranaki region; e.g. biological sciences, natural sciences, geology, archaeology or anthropology.

George Mason Sustainable Land Use Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March   
Available to support students enrolled in postgraduate study at Massey University in studies of topics beneficial to durable resource management as affected by land use, and where the research component of the course will occupy at least the full year (PhD and Masters programmes).

George Terry Memorial Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March   
For students enrolled in an honours degree or postgraduate diploma in Applied Academic Programme disciplines relevant to agriculture or horticulture.

Glad McArthur Horticultural Scholarship
Closing date: 30 November
For NZ citizens or permanent residents who attended a Central Otago High School, or whose home is in Central Otago and who are enrolled in horticulture related study

Golden Plover Award
Closing date: 7 June
Open to a student who is conducting original research into any aspect of the ecology or management of wetland at Masters level (part-time or full-time) at any University in New Zealand.

Gosling Ornamental Horticulture Bursary
Closing date: 10 March   
For students enrolled full-time for a degree in horticulture at Massey University. Applicants must show in their application that they are interested in pursuing a career in growing ornamental plants, either in the nursery industry, cut-flower production or management of parks.

Hawkes Bay Fruitgrowers' Association Charitable Trust Horticultural Scholarship

For students studying pipfruit, summerfruit, or kiwifruit who reside in the Hawkes Bay

Helen E Akers PhD Scholarship

Holt Forest Trust Scholarship
Closing date: 30 November
For students studying in all disciplines relating to the forestry industry including specific areas of saw milling, harvesting, processing and utilisation.

Hurley Fraser Postgraduate Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March   
For graduate students of MU who are enrolled in a postgraduate degree or diploma in Applied Academic Programme disciplines relevant to agriculture or horticulture

Institute of Fundamental Sciences Summer Scholarship - Plant Sciences
Closing date: 20 September   
Eight Summer Scholarships across subject areas of Biochemistry, Chemistry, Genetics, Mathematics, Microbiology, Nanoscience, Physics, Plant Sciences and Statistics are available to MU students who wish to undertake research work under the supervision of a member of the Institute Staff.

Available to a Massey University student majoring in one or more of the subject areas of Biochemistry, Chemistry, Genetics, Mathematics, Microbiology, Nanoscience, Physics, Plant Sciences or Statistics and who wishes to undertake research work under the supervision of a member of the Institute staff

Lovell & Berys Clark Scholarships

Available to graduates of any university in New Zealand who are enrolled at Massey University in postgraduate studies (including Master's & PhD).

MacMillan Brown Agricultural Research Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March   
For students enrolled in a PhD in Applied Academic Programme disciplines relevant to agriculture or horticulture.

Massey University Doctoral Scholarship
Closing date: 1 October   
Massey University Doctoral Scholarships are offered to encourage full time doctoral studies at Massey University. Applicants require an excellent academic record and must be enrolled or eligible to enrol in a 120 credit doctoral research paper.

Massey University Masterate Scholarship
Closing dates: 1 July and 1 October 
Masterate Scholarships are offered for the purpose of encouraging postgraduate research at Massey University. Applicants must be enrolled or eligible to enrol full-time in a research programme towards a Masters degree.

Masterton Trust Lands Trust Scholarship
Closing date: 31 March   
For students who are, or have been, resident in the Trust district and are enrolled for full time or part time research or postgraduate study

Miller Massey Buchanan Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March

Pioneer Agricultural Scholarship

Available to students in the 3rd Year of the agriculture major of either Bachelor of AgriScience or Bachelor of Science, but students undertaking appropriate honours, postgraduate diploma or Diploma of Rural Studies programmes will also be considered.

Prof Ren Jizhou Scholarship

For Chinese students enrolled in either a first degree or a postgraduate degree or diploma in Applied Academic Programme disciplines relevant to agriculture.

Pukehou Pouto Scholarship
Closing date: 1 October   
For NZ citizens who are graduates of a NZ University, completing postgraduate study in either Agricultural Science or Silvicultural Science

QEII National Trust Brian Molloy Doctoral Research Scholarship
Closing date: 14 June
Open to students seeking their first PhD qualification. The scholarship aims to support those interested in promoting and advancing ecological science and conservation in New Zealand.

Ravensdown Agricultural Research Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March   
Available to support students enrolled in a PhD or the research year of a masterate programme within agriculture or horticulture, with preference being given to those applicants undertaking research in soil nutrient management.

Robert Bruce Trust
Closing date: 31 March   
Research or project grants for students studying in the forestry or afforestation. Research projects must be clearly for the benefit of the public good of New Zealand.

Robert Gibson Methodist Trust Board Bursaries & Student Grants
Closing date: 20 November
For students studying undergraduate or postgraduate level, with preference being given to orphans, persons taking an agriculture course, & whose parents are Methodists or Presbyterians

Seed Tech Services Scholarship
Closing date: 10 March   
Open to full-time postgraduate students at Massey University undertaking research involving agricultural plants, such as pasture, crops, seeds and trees. Preference may be given to honours students, and to projects that involve some aspect of seed biology or seed technology.

Shirtcliffe Fellowships

Spragg Agricultural Research and Development Award
Closing dates: 1 April and 1 October  
Available to scientists, technicians, advisors and consultants or PhD students holding a relevant tertiary qualification to fund travel within New Zealand or overseas, for the purpose of acquiring further research experience and for training which would be of value to the pastoral industry of NZ.

Available to groups and individuals who propose to study the flora and fauna, geology, vulcanology, weather and natural and human history of the Tongariro National Park.

TrustPower Tararua Wind Farm Research Bursary
Closing date: 10 March   
Open to fulltime postgraduate students, with preference given to students with research projects of relevance to generation or efficient use of energy, to the interaction of energy assets and agricultural assets, or to the efficient management of New Zealand's natural resources.

Winston Churchill Memorial Trust

Winston Churchill Fellowships are intended for travel, typically short term of between three weeks and three months duration, for intensive investigative research.

ZESPRI Innovation Fellowship
