Monogastric research

Massey University's research in this area focuses on nutrition for animal growth efficiency and health. We research the nutrition and physiology of monogastric species including cats, dogs, horses, pigs, and  poultry. We also investigate the quality and human health attributes of animal products. There is a strong focus on pet foods, and we work closely with producer organisations to provide industry research and consultancy services. 


Animal mathematical modelling

We are investigating growth and product quality in animals by developing growth models for pigs and poultry. All available information about nutrition, metabolism and genetics is synthesised, transformed into mathematical algorithms, and integrated into a simulation computer program.  

Animal nutrition and physiology

Our research focuses on how nutrients are used by an animal and how their utilisation can be affected and optimised with different ingredients, processing, and management.

bioactive food

Bioactive food and feed ingredients

We develop and evaluate nutraceuticals, functional foods, and ingredients for the human and animal food industries. We also examine effects of nutrition on characteristics of animal-derived human foods, including taste, quality, yields, shelf life, and sensory attributes.  

Companion animal nutrition

We provide nutritional evaluation, development and optimisation of pet foods to improve the health and wellbeing of companion animals. We evaluate pet nutrition, health and digestive function, and comprehensively analyse the impact of pet food processing techniques such as extrusion, canning and drying.

Equine nutrition

The Equine Nutrition Research unit allows commercial and research partners to undertake comprehensive evaluation, development and optimisation of equine feeds and supplements through practical feeding trials and detailed laboratory analyses.

Feed evaluation

We provide feed evaluation and characterisation, with in vitro and in vivo modelling as major research focuses. We are developing novel assays, particularly bioassays and gut function modelling.

Pig nutrition

Our research focuses on testing and evaluating feedstuffs and feed additives, improving piglet gut health through nutrition, enhancing nutritive value of pork for humans, and pig growth modelling.

Poultry nutrition

We focus on testing and evaluating feedstuffs and feed additives, investigating the impact of feed processing on digestive efficiency, management of gut flora through nutrition and husbandry, and bird welfare.
