Research Expertise

Research Interests

I began my research career applying epidemiology to the understanding risk factors for musculoskeletal injuries in racehorses. From 2008 and 2010 I was the principal investigator on a Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry funded project to investigate the effectiveness of vaccination for the control of equine influenza. I have also begun working with clinicians at the Hong Kong Jockey Club on a range of health and performance issues in horses. My research portfolio has also expanded to include small animal epidemiology and biosecurity. The small animal component focuses on working and service dogs and I am a director of the Centre for Working and Service Dog Health and Welfare. My research in the area of biosecurity includes risk assessment, development of decision support tools and the design and evaluation of surveillance systems. For example, I have worked with researchers at the University of Sydney to develop methodology to evaluate the effectiveness of passive surveillance to detect exotic animal diseases. I have also collaborated with others to evaluate Great Britain's Trichinella surveillance and design a new surveillance system. More recently I have applied my skills in risk analysis and surveillance of animal diseases to plant pests.
