Marta is the co-director of the New Zealand Biochar Research Centre. She has been a member of the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (2013-2015) and a member of the Board of Directors of the International Biochar Initiative (2011-2015; vice-chair 2014; chair 2015). Marta studied Agricultural Engineering at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Lleida, Spain) and then received her MSc and PhD in Soil Science from the University of California, Davis. Previous to working at Massey University, she was a Senior Researcher - “Ramon y Cajal” (2003-2008) at NEIKER (Spain) and lecturer (1999-2003) at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (Spain).

Completed Projects

Project Title: Soil carbon sink enhancement

A research team from the NZBRC-Massey University (Prof. Hedley and A/Prof Camps) Plant and Food Research (Dr. Deurer) and Landcare Research¿s Global Change Processes team (Prof. Saggar) is undertaking research that aims to increase the stocks of stabilised soil carbon in pasture soils as a greenhouse gas mitigation strategy. Approximately 50% of soil carbon in New Zealand is under grazed pasture management. If full carbon accounting becomes part of future commitments to international climate change mitigation protocols, then land management techniques that can be applied to increase soil carbon stocks under grazed pastures must be developed, verified and their wider benefits and costs assessed. To achieve increasing soil carbon stocks will require that more of the plant-derived carbon entering soils is transformed into soil carbon sinks of greater permanence than those occupied by the majority of current topsoil carbon. Greater permanence of soil carbon is not achieved by modifying the chemical nature of plant carbon entering the soil. Greater permanence is only achieved when new carbon is stabilised through organo-mineral complexation, or is converted to highly aromatic carbon such as biochar, or, when its decomposition is limited by soil physical or biological conditions.

Project Title: Biochar application to soils: can cattle do it for us?

We will evaluate the use of biochar ¿ charcoal produced from the pyrolysis of carbonaceous materials ¿ as an ingredient for cattle feed by means of an artificial rumen. With the use of this technology, the potential effects of biochar on rumen metabolism will be investigated, with special attention given to concentrations of hydrogen gas (H2), methane (CH4) and ammonium (NH4+). If this measure is proven to be adequate in terms of animal and product safety, livestock could be a suitable vehicle for biochar delivery to the pastoral soil via dung pats. Much interest has been focused on the potential for biochar addition to soils to provide a large carbon (C) sink and enhance soil properties. This technology is C negative, that is, it removes net CO2 from the atmosphere and stores it as stable soil C, mainly as black C. Therefore, biochar could represent the ideal greenhouse gases (GHG) mitigation solution for NZ¿s unique mix of pastoral and forestry land. However, biochar has a very low bulk density and hence, when the biochar comprises small particles, there is a high risk of particulate air pollution during and after delivery
