The best thing about Massey's program is the emphasis on general veterinary medicine. It’s so important to be familiar with all species as you never know where life is going to take you.
After completing my undergraduate degree at California Polytechnic University, I chose to study at Massey because I had spent time in New Zealand during my animal science degree and loved it so much I had to come back. Being AVMA accredited made my choice really easy and the fact that Massey accepted US financial aid made things even better.
Studying is hard, no matter where you go. I learn best by getting involved and doing things. My favourite part of the programme was the requirement to gain experience in a variety of veterinary fields. I chose amazing areas to learn and play such as working on a sheep and beef farm in Otago, a dairy farm in Hawkes Bay and doing clinical work in Nelson.
There was also flexibility to plan overseas externships so I was lucky enough to gain some veterinary experience back in California and also in the UK. The opportunity to experience so many places and different perspectives was awesome.
After graduating, I spent 6 months as a Massey veterinarian in the Farm Services Clinic, and then headed back to the US to do a year-long internship in North Carolina focusing on Ruminant Health and Reproduction. I now have less than a year to go in my residency at UC Davis focusing on large animal internal medicine and I’m excited to see what the future holds.
