Musculoskeletal Discomfort

Early research on musculoskeletal discomfort focussed on manual materials handling, load carriage and the design and evaluation of military and leisure backpacks. This focus continues with recent studies of modern backpacks, including children’s schoolbags. CErgOSH is an international leader in research on ergonomics in schools, school furniture design and musculoskeletal discomfort amongst school students and teachers. Three recent projects were the first to quantify musculoskeletal symptoms (MSS) and identify MSS risk factors in veterinarians, New Zealand workers and Indonesian coal miners. Another recent study involved the development of guidelines for management of some common musculoskeletal disorders of the distal upper limb.
